  A THOUGHT FROM YESTERDAY'S SERMON: Luke 9:51-62

Luke tells us in this passage that when Jesus knew the time for him to die was near, he set his mind on the goal of ascending. That seems a bit odd, don't you think? As we talked about last week, every time the disciples had asked questions up until now, Jesus talked about dying! Now that he is facing the moment when he would actually suffer and die on the cross, he changes the subject to his ascension. What do you think this teaches us as his followers? Jesus' talk of death during his day-to-day life shows us how we are to live our day to day lives - with the thought that we are not our own, that we do not belong to ourselves but to our Savior. Whatever tasks we face (school work, chores, learning to treat our siblings better than ourselves, learning to obey parents, etc.) are things we can only do well, if we are living with the idea of dying to self always at the front of our minds. However, we can know we should die to ourselves without actually having the ability to do it. How then, can we actually do the dying? Only by focusing on the reason for dying to self: living for and with God. As we have said before, God never calls us to give up something without also replacing it with something better. He replaces the life we would create for ourselves, with one that is far better than we can imagine. So how do you know that you are dying so that you can live? Ask yourself this question: Do I spend more time grumbling about my life or asking God to help me do my tasks in a way that would serve His purposes to give me and those around me HIS life?
