A THOUGHT FROM YESTERDAY'S PASSAGE:

Can you trust God when everything goes wrong? Of course, we know the "churchy" answer to this question is yes. But whether or not you believe that depends a lot on who you believe God is and what you think He is doing. If you think of God like a superhero, you are going to be quite disappointed when he doesn't swoop in just when everything seems to be falling apart and save the day. Maybe the question would be a little better if we asked it like this: Can you trust God when you know He has the power to do something that he doesn't do?

As we looked at Exodus 15 & 16 yesterday, that was the question Israel faced. God had led them mightily out of slavery in Egypt. He had brought them safely through the Red Sea. They had seen their enemies defeated and knew their God was powerful. So now, as they faced the new problem of being in a wilderness with no water and knew God was powerful, the question they faced was not, "CAN God save us, but can we TRUST him? Is He on our side? Does He want to save us? Does He even care?"

And as they realized that was the question, they began to grumble.  We can understand this. We are just like the Israelites - quick to grumble when things don't turn out like we expected. But here's the thing, the real question we should be asking is not, "Is God on OUR side,' but rather, 'Am I on God's side?"  What Israel failed to understand was that God's plan was far bigger than they imagined. They wanted Him to just give them some water but was taking them to a home with a never-ending spring of water where they would never thirst again. But getting there involved walking through a wilderness.

God may not take you through an actual wilderness, but we will all have times in our life when things just don't work out like we thought. In those times, we will feel like the Israelites felt. We won't know how long it will be before we see where God is leading and we will be tempted to grumble and ask, "God, do you care? Are you with me? Are you on my side?" But here is the amazing answer: God says, "Look at my Son, Jesus. I sent Him into the broken world for you where things didn't work right. He fought death and beat it so that He could give you the power to beat it too. Of course I am for you. But I'm not on your side, I have bought you to be on my side!"

MEMORY CORNER

BIBLE VERSE:
“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.”   Exodus 17:6

HEIDELBERG CATECHISM QUESTIONS:
Q3: How do you come to know your misery?

A3: The Law of God tells me.

Q4: What does God's Law require of us?

A4: Christ teaches us in summary in Matthew 22:37-40: "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and the first commandment. And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these 2 commandments hang all the law and the prophets.'"
