The Bumbershoot: June 18, 2018

The Bumbershoot
The purpose of children's ministry at TPC is to give specific thought and attention to the way children grow in their understanding of Christ's Kingdom and what membership in that Kingdom entails.

Worship with us each Sunday morning starting at 9:30.

COMMUNITY GARDEN: If you are interested in helping with our new community garden, email Piet Grove. He would love to help your family get involved.

PRAYER GUIDES: If you would like to take part in praying for our Muslim neighbors, we have 30-day prayer guides available on the Missions table outside the main office.

Summer time means fewer scheduled events and more time to fellowship with friends and neighbors. How are you showing friendship and hospitality to your neighbors during this time off of school and regularly scheduled events? Email pictures of your summer fun or invitations to your plans to share in The Bumbershoot each week.

Yesterday, we heard a story Jesus told when 2 brothers were fighting.  Have you ever had a disagreement with your brother or sister or a friend and gone to tattle to a parent or teacher because you knew you were the one who was right? That is similar to what was going on here. One brother had been left an inheritance (that means everything valuable that belonged to his father) and the other brother wanted someone in authority to tell him he should share it. The story Jesus tells teaches these brothers and us that when we fight about things, there is hardly ever one who is completely right and one who is completely wrong. Rather, both were in the wrong. Both brothers were failing to see that God was the giver of all good gifts which means 2 things:

1 - nothing really belongs to us so why not share everything God gives simply because He first shared it with you?

2 - If someone else has something that you don't, demanding or expecting them to share it is failing to trust that God will provide you with everything you need.

So, when we disagree with a friend or brother, rather than focusing on what the other is doing wrong and trying to make someone correct them, we should focus on God by looking at how Jesus responded in similar situations: He was always in the right, but never demanded his own way.  He shared everything the Father gave Him, even when it cost him his life! How are you imitating Jesus - the only true human - as you have disagreements?

Pray for families who travel on vacation during summer months and be sure to let us know how we can pray for you and your family.

Children's Questions or prayer requests can be placed in the box on the Children's Table.

“And he said to his disciples, 'Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.'" Luke 12:22-23 (ESV)

Q: What is the second commandment?

A: The second commandment is, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any things that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Q: What does the second commandment teach us?

A: To worship God in a proper manner, and to avoid idolatry.

Though June and July are months of rest for our children's teachers, we always meet for worship at 9:30 am on Sundays. We delight in seeing you all there worshipping with us! Use the summer months to plan get-togethers in your neighborhoods, homes or local parks with friends and neighbors. Please pray for church leaders as we plan for the upcoming year.
