  A THOUGHT FROM YESTERDAY'S PASSAGE:

Proverbs 16:18 is a fairly famous passage that tells us "Pride goes before destruction," but have you ever wondered exactly what "pride" is and why it is so dangerous?  In the passage Pastor Brandon taught yesterday from Luke 14:1-11, Jesus defined pride by telling a story.

While at a dinner party that was attended by many of the religious and community leaders, Jesus listened to conversations and watched the way people conducted themselves. Seeing that they were all focused on themselves, he told a story about another party. In his story, all the guests tried to get the best seats in the house and ended up embarrased when the host asked them to move out of the honorable seats for the sake of a humble person he wanted to honor.

Jesus wanted his hearers to understand that there are 2 ways of thinking about His Kingdom: The first is with pride which is concerned only for self and ensuring your own admittance. The second is with humility which is concerned with embodying Christ's way of living.

The point Jesus was making is that no one actually deserves a place of honor at His party (in His Kingdom). In fact, none of us deserve to even be there at all! But because he humbled himself and gave up not just his seat, but his life so that we could be invited, pride (concern for self) has no place in our lives anymore.

We all face daily temptations to grab the best and leave others without. When that temptation comes, remember Jesus' story concerning the humility that defines his kingdom people and ask for his help giving up your pride so that you might be humble like He is.

Lord Jesus, thank you for humbling yourself to rescue me from sin and death. Help me to share the love you have shared with me in my words and actions.

CHILDREN'S QUESTIONS & PRAYER REQUESTS:

Q: What is pride?

A: The Bible warns against is  considering yourself  better than others.  It is believing that you are somehow more likeable or less sinful than someone else.

Children's Questions or prayer requests can be placed in the box on the Children's Table.
